SEO vs AEO vs GEO: what’s the difference, and which does a UAE business need?

Agencies now sell three acronyms where there used to be one. The good news: they are not three separate projects. They are three ways of looking at the same goal, which is making sure that when a customer searches or asks, your business is in the answer.

SEO: being found on Google

Search engine optimisation is the work of getting your pages to rank in the regular search results and the map results. It covers the content on your site, how it is structured, how fast and crawlable it is, and how other websites refer to you.

AEO: being the answer Google shows

Answer engine optimisation focuses on the answer boxes at the top of the page: Google’s AI Overviews, AI Mode and featured snippets. These pull short, direct answers from pages that state them clearly. AEO means writing those direct answers, using question-style headings, adding FAQ sections and marking them up with schema.

GEO: being recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity

Generative engine optimisation is about the AI assistants people chat with. They search the web, then write a recommendation in their own words. GEO means giving them plenty of consistent, trustworthy material about your business: your own pages, but also mentions on other sites, directory listings and republished articles.

How they overlap

  • All three depend on useful content that answers real questions.
  • All three need your pages to be indexed and easy for machines to read.
  • All three reward consistency: the same business details everywhere.
  • AEO adds a focus on short, direct answers and structured data. GEO adds a focus on mentions beyond your own website.

Which should a UAE business prioritise?

Do them together, in this order of effort: build the foundation (pages that answer customer questions, correct schema, Google Business Profile, indexing in Google and Bing), then widen your footprint (republished articles, listings, mentions), then measure monthly across Google and the AI assistants. Treating them as one programme is cheaper and works better than buying three separate services.

That is how our plans are built: every month we publish articles on your site, keep your Google profile active, republish your articles elsewhere and check the technical details. On the Growth plan we also track what AI assistants say about you. See pricing or read how to get your business cited by AI.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. AI assistants rely on web search results to find sources, so strong SEO is the foundation that GEO is built on. GEO adds attention to how your business is described across the wider web.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO targets the answer features inside search engines, like Google AI Overviews and featured snippets. GEO targets standalone AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. The techniques overlap heavily.

Do small businesses need AEO and GEO?

Yes, arguably more than large ones. AI answers name only a few businesses per question, so a smaller business with clear, well-structured information can appear next to much bigger competitors.
